Harrison Hudson spent the day with us at the studio yesterday taking photos and hanging out. He let everyone ride his scooter which we were sure would end in disaster but everyone made it through unharmed. Here are a couple photos from the day.

We finished tracking “Everything To Nothing” last night. Everyone seems to be getting used to the monitoring system and playing together with the click track and headphones and everything.

Afterward I went out with harrison to grab a drink at the Taproom and then he crashed at the hotel with us. It was nice to get out somewhere other than the studio or hotel. Our friend Tommy Hans is here at the studio now hanging out. He was kind enough to let us come hang out at his house the first night we got here. He used to play in a band called Arkitekt that we Manchester used to play with allot before I joined the band and we havent seen much of his in the last couple years so it has been great to see him.

My wife is on her way to Nashville now for the weekend so I am excited to see her. I’m sure it will be a little boring for her at the studio and I won’t have a ton of time to hang out but I am really looking forward to seeing her.

We have been tracking a song tentatively named “Tony The Tiger” today. We had some issues with Andy’s amp that took a while to fix and then got through a handful of takes and now Joe is comping it all together to see if we need to track anymore while we hang out and wait for or sushi to arrive. Hopefully we got it all and can get through another track before wrapping tonight.

I am currently sitting in the lounge at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN where we are working on our new album. We loaded in yesterday and pent the whole day setting up, testing out different gear and mics and finding the right sounds. My drums setup and oversized cymbals gave Joe alot of trouble So we ended up spending a good bit of time on the drums. I ended up going to Fork’s Drum Closet this morning and bought a 24″ giant beat ride and a 20″ giant beat crash. They sound much better in the room than the 2002’s I was playing.
We finally got to tracking today and started with “Black Man”. It took us a while to get out mixes right and fight the right tempo and the right click track but we finally got through it and did a few takes of the song. Joe is currently sorting through them and making sure we have everything we need.
We will probably try and get started on another song before calling it a night.
I lost the cable that connect my camera to the computer so I don’t have any photos to post yet. Maybe I will get a cable tomorrow.
I need to go watch what may be the best film ever. “Black X-mas”.

This last week has been a whirlwind. We have been doing pre production with Joe Chicarelli each day which has been awesome. Joe has had such great ideas and input and the songs are even better now than they were last week. This whole writing process has been interesting and different for all of us. With the last record we had been playing most of the songs for a while before recording them and knew exactly what we wanted them to sound like. With this record we wrote everything in a very short amount of time and left a lot of it open to work through in pre production. We are all extremely excited to see how they continue to progress once we get into the studio.
Today I am heading to Matt Malpass’ studio Marigolds & Monsters to work on a new project for Favorite Gentlemen. We are going to be recording video and audio of Right Away, Great Captain! performing a few songs for a new series we are starting. This is the test run so I am excited to see how it all turns out. J is helping out and taking care of all of the video duties. It is amazing having friends like Matt and J, that are so talented at what they do and who are willing to get involved and try new things like this. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

Today was day one of pre-preoduction with Joe Chicarelli. Joe will be producing the new album. We work on two songs today. It is always takes a little while to get used to another persons work flow and ideas and comment but by the end of the day I think we all felt really comfortable with Joe and him ideas really added a lot to the songs. I think both songs were much better by the end of the day.
Tomorrow we will try and get through another song or two and then we get to go see My Morning Jacket play at The fabulous Fox Theater tomorrow night. We are all extremely excited to them play again as they are mind blowing live. If you haven’t seen them, go buy OKONOKOS. They released a live DVD and CD that are awesome. Our friend Sam Erickson Directed it and it is one of the best live films I have ever seen.

We are back in the studio again. We started today. Andy, Robert and I loaded all of our gear into Vintage Song Studios to start working on an EP with our good friend Dan Hannon. Chris is visiting his family right now and J is out on tour selling merch and filming with Alexander T. Kent.

Andy is tracking a scratch guitar track right now and then I will start tracking drums. It is a completely different approach to writing and recording than the way we did our last record but we are really enjoying it so far. I will post some photos tomorrow.

so it seems all of my posts recently start with me apologizing for slacking off and not writing much. So this time I am making no excuses. I have been busy! Busy being at home for once and spending time with my wife and family finally. I have lots of pictures waiting to be edited and posted and they will be soon.

We are home FINALLY, and it feels GREAT. My wife had vacation days for the first few days we were home and so I was somewhat forced to take a break from work as well and it was great. It is so nice to be home and do normal things like go to dinner with friends, go to church, and just watch bad TV in bed with my wife. I went to a bachelor party last night for my friend Jon Chalden. I have started working on screen printing. I have started watching Gossip Girl. YES, Gossip Girl. I have been reading up on eating healthy and working on getting my family eating better for the sake of my Dad’s health. I never thought I woudl EVER buy fat free anything or care about health food but since my Dad’s health is at risk it has changed the way I think about everything.

I am at my friend Matt Malpass’ studio Marigolds and Monsters. I love the name and the logo. Matt is an old old friend. We used to play in bands in highschool and tour together. We both ended up in Atlanta engineering and producing records. It has been really nice being in a studio environment today. Jeff from Say Anything came by today. It was good to see him. Matt from Relient K is over right now tracking some keys. A band called Ellington is recording their EP with Matt right now. They came all the way from Australia which is pretty awesome.

That is all from now. I will try and post some pictures tomorrow.

It is almost 5AM and we are heading west on I-40 somewhere in texas. We just passed a cross that must have been 40 feet tall. Andy is driving for the first time on this whole tour which is unusual. Not that he is driving but that it is the first time. We usually all share the load of driving but our new tour manager Joe tends to take the wheel for every drive unless we force him to let us drive. It is a blessing and a relief most of the time but it has been a little weird. The relationship between each of us has largely been developed thru our time spend driving and/or being co pilot with each other.
It has been a long time since andy and I have done a drive together and we picked a LONG one this time. We started in Edmond, OK and are driving towards Tempe, AZ. The other bands are staying in Albuquerque tomorrow and weatherbox is actually playing a show tomorrow night. depending on how we are feeling when we pass through we may stop and stay there as well.
Andy is listening to elliot smith’s either/or and I am enjoying it. I have never been a fan of his mostly due to not enjoying his voice much. it seems I am the only person in the world who doesn’t love him. I tend to love every song of his I hear someone else cover though. I first heard the song between the bars covered by madeline peroux and fell in love with the song. This is really my first time hearing the original version. I am enjoying this record more than anything else of his I have heard so far.
It has been a productive drive so far. We have talked through a lot of manchester orchestra and favorite gentlemen business that we haven’t had the time to cover due to being on the road. Touring isn’t very conducive to running a business. It isn’t very conducive to relationships either. Luckily I have an amazing wife and he has an amazing fiance and they are incredibly understanding and patient. The more we tour the more we realize how insane and unhealthy and abnormal it is. We are all ready to be home. The break will be good for us all. We all have relationships and family that we need to devote time to. Andy’s wedding will be an amazing time. we are all excited about getting back into the rehearsal space and working on new songs and then record the new record. We are beyond ready for something fresh. We need new life artistically.
Right now I think I need sleep however I probably will wait until we finish this record and the sun is about to come up. I feel like I just had some major break through. I have tried to “get” elliot smith for years now and just have never enjoyed it but somehow this record, on this drive has changed my mind and I somehow “get” it. I FINALLY get it. Goodnight.

Kansas city was fun but I can’t seem to remember too much about it. Jake from C&C drums was there so I got to hang out with him a bit.we had another 8 hour drive today so we had to wake up at 6:30 AM. I can’t remember being more miserable waking up history. I went straight for the back of the van and slept a couple of hours while Chris and Robert took the first driving shift. I was happy to wake up at a QT gas station. Frozen rooster booster, hot dog, taquito and BBQ chips for lunch. It was nice and warm about an hour outside of Chicago but by the time we got to the venue it was snowing. We played the house of blues tonight. Other than the 8 flights of stairs I really like playing there. They had catering today which was a nice change from the usual fast food. Fried chicken, green beans, Mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The show was decent but nothing special. Brett and Matt from Anthallo came out and hung out for a while. It was really great seeing them. They are about to leave for a tour with Aloha. Go see them if they come close to you. They are amazing. After the show we all went next door to 10 pins bowling alley and bowled a couple games. Turns out Biffy Clyro are amazing bowlers. I ended up bowling 100 and Jeff from Say Anthing came back at the end with about 5 frames of strikes or spares including a spare and a strike in the last frame. We then both started the next game with strikes. It was all downhill after that. We are now in the van, heading a few minutes out of the city to get a cheaper hotel. Tomorrow we drive to Detroit and play at st andrews. Hopefully papa smurf will be there.
