Gasoline Heart’s new album is up for pre-sale at the P Is For Panda website. Chad gave me a copy of the album and it is killer. I recommend buying it. I foresee it being one of my go to driving records this summer.

4.06.09 London Day 1

We arrived in London early this morning. Our manager Brad arrived right around the same time and we actually all ended up at customs at the same time. We had a bit of a hold up for a while as they uad to double check our work permits due to some changes to their rules. We were sorted and going after 10 minutes or so but brad got stuck for a few ours along with a guy from Pakistan claiming asylum.
We finally left for the hotel without him so we could get some sleep. I think he ended up being there a few hours.
They were actual filming for a reality tv show about the customs department or something and wanted to film him for the show. Luckily he said no.
We got a few hours of sleep and then Brad and I walked around and found a Lebanese place to get some food before hanging around at the hotel trying to get the internet and email to work. We are staying at the Cumberland which is way better than most of the other places we have stayed.
We had dinner with Mike and Bex who are our booking agents here. They took us to a place called The Sea Shell for fish and chips. Bex and Brad then took us to the Barfly to catch the Silversun Pickups’ show which was fun.
Brad and I are currently trying to figure out how to watch the NCAA Basketball championship game. It isnt looking so good right now.
We have a photo shoot for kerang tomorrow morning so I should probably just get some sleep if we cant watch the game.

Pneumonia

I listened to Whiskeytown’s album Pneumonia on the way home tonight. It had been a while since I had listened to it and I was reminded how great it is. I think it is by far some of my favorite songwriting by Ryan Adams. The first half of the album is especially good.
Speaking of Ryan Adams, Jonathan pointed me to his most recent blog at the Cardinals’ site the other day and it is a really long and interesting post about him leaving the music world for the time being. Interestingly enough, I now can’t find the post on their blog. Maybe they deleted it. I dunno, oh well.

Speaking of Cardinals – Super Bowl? Never saw it coming. Good for them. The Steelers just beat the Ravens 23-14 so they will be headed to the Super Bowl as well. I guess I need to make plans for where to watch it.

Joaquin Pheonix + Diddy?

Joaquin Phoenix announced a while back that he was “not doing films anymore” and pursuing a music career after falling in love with music due to his role in Walk The Line. He had been working on an album with the help of The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess for a while but nothing ever seemed to come of it. Now he has announced that he is making a rap album to be produced by Diddy and his brother in-law Casey Affleck with be making a documentary of the process. Videos have now surfaced on youtube of his first performance in Las Vegas which you can see below as well as his retirement announcement. It appears as if it could be a set up for some sort of huge joke/documentary as it is all SO ridiculous. Either way I can’t wait for the album and documentary.

I know I am a little late to the game but if you haven’t checked out Jaydiohead then go and do it NOW. As you probably guessed it is a mash up of Jay-Z and Radiohead. Honestly I STILL haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet but the bits I have heard are pretty badass. Enjoy.

Harrison Hudson spent the day with us at the studio yesterday taking photos and hanging out. He let everyone ride his scooter which we were sure would end in disaster but everyone made it through unharmed. Here are a couple photos from the day.

We finished tracking “Everything To Nothing” last night. Everyone seems to be getting used to the monitoring system and playing together with the click track and headphones and everything.

Afterward I went out with harrison to grab a drink at the Taproom and then he crashed at the hotel with us. It was nice to get out somewhere other than the studio or hotel. Our friend Tommy Hans is here at the studio now hanging out. He was kind enough to let us come hang out at his house the first night we got here. He used to play in a band called Arkitekt that we Manchester used to play with allot before I joined the band and we havent seen much of his in the last couple years so it has been great to see him.

My wife is on her way to Nashville now for the weekend so I am excited to see her. I’m sure it will be a little boring for her at the studio and I won’t have a ton of time to hang out but I am really looking forward to seeing her.

We have been tracking a song tentatively named “Tony The Tiger” today. We had some issues with Andy’s amp that took a while to fix and then got through a handful of takes and now Joe is comping it all together to see if we need to track anymore while we hang out and wait for or sushi to arrive. Hopefully we got it all and can get through another track before wrapping tonight.

This last week has been a whirlwind. We have been doing pre production with Joe Chicarelli each day which has been awesome. Joe has had such great ideas and input and the songs are even better now than they were last week. This whole writing process has been interesting and different for all of us. With the last record we had been playing most of the songs for a while before recording them and knew exactly what we wanted them to sound like. With this record we wrote everything in a very short amount of time and left a lot of it open to work through in pre production. We are all extremely excited to see how they continue to progress once we get into the studio.
Today I am heading to Matt Malpass’ studio Marigolds & Monsters to work on a new project for Favorite Gentlemen. We are going to be recording video and audio of Right Away, Great Captain! performing a few songs for a new series we are starting. This is the test run so I am excited to see how it all turns out. J is helping out and taking care of all of the video duties. It is amazing having friends like Matt and J, that are so talented at what they do and who are willing to get involved and try new things like this. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

Pre-Production – Day 1

Today was day one of pre-preoduction with Joe Chicarelli. Joe will be producing the new album. We work on two songs today. It is always takes a little while to get used to another persons work flow and ideas and comment but by the end of the day I think we all felt really comfortable with Joe and him ideas really added a lot to the songs. I think both songs were much better by the end of the day.
Tomorrow we will try and get through another song or two and then we get to go see My Morning Jacket play at The fabulous Fox Theater tomorrow night. We are all extremely excited to them play again as they are mind blowing live. If you haven’t seen them, go buy OKONOKOS. They released a live DVD and CD that are awesome. Our friend Sam Erickson Directed it and it is one of the best live films I have ever seen.
